Partner Organizations
OrchKids - Baltimore Symphony Orchestra - Baltimore, Maryland
–
We continue to support the String Teaching Fellowship Program at OrchKids.
Baltimore’s West and East neighborhoods are home to some of the City’s most vulnerable families. Children and families in these neighborhoods are historically underserved and face severe economic hardship with limited, or no, opportunities for creative enrichment. OrchKids works with children enrolled in Baltimore City Public Schools.
Bookworm Gardens - Sheboygan, WISCONSIN
–
We love Bookworm Gardens for its wonderful mix of storybooks and botanic gardens! For the 2019 season, we provided the Gardens with all their bird seed needs to keep the gardens full of song birds for the kids to enjoy.
The Montessori School of Lake Forest - LAKE FOREST, ILLINOIS

The Montessori School of Lake Forest started the Ilan Hurtado Memorial Fund shortly after his memorial there on what would have been his 10th birthday, September 21, 2014.
Ilan loved art and visiting the Art Institute of Chicago, so the decision was made by the family that the monies should be used to fund an annual trip to the Art Institute of Chicago for the Upper Elementary students.
Music Institute of Chicago - CHICAGO, ILLINOIS

The Ilan Hurtado Scholarship is awarded, “In support of tuition or other related expenses for a young cellist in the MIC Suzuki Program.” The scholarship seeks students who not only show a financial need, but show a prolonged interest in studying the cello.
The Ilan Hurtado Memorial Scholarship, which has collected approximately $20,000 since Ilan's death is currently in its 7th year.
Winnetka Library - WINNETKA, ILLINOIS
–
In honor of Ilan’s Saturday visits to this public library, we donated a subscription to Mad Magazine for their Teen Area. The current issue stays in the library, and will have a plaque on the plastic cover in dedication. The older issues are available for the kids (and adults) to check out to take home for their reading pleasure.
John Michael Kohler Arts Center - Kohler, WISCONSIN
–
In honor of Ilan’s love for this unique art museum, 5 Purple Oranges has been working closely with the education staff to design our annual gifts, tying each gift to exhibition offerings. We are pleased to be able to provide opportunities for as many children as possible to enjoy what the JMKAC has to offer as much as Ilan did.
Skateistan - Afghanistan, Cambodia, South Africa
–
Skate and Create is the biggest program offered by Skateistan and consists of a one hour skate lesson in the skatepark followed by one hour of arts-based learning in the classroom.
Lesson topics include: recycling old skateboard decks, crafting footwear, anger management, critical thinking, gardening, storytelling, the solar system, and robotics. They use arts as a medium for exploring these topics to make the programs accessible.
Skateboarding itself also has a culture that encourages creativity (there is no right or wrong way to skate) self-motivated progression, confidence-building, supporting and bonding with your peers. This bonding across social divides such as ethnicity is especially significant in a place like Afghanistan where those divisions are so pronounced and a lack of cross-cultural interaction makes for a lack of shared vision for the future.
Our 2021 gift provided programs supplies, hygiene materials, and support for community events for the students in Cambodia.
