Judy Haddad

BOARD PRESIDENT | executive director AND FOUNDER

My name is Judy Haddad, and I am the mother of Ilan Hurtado, in whose memory 5 Purple Oranges was founded. Ilan and I were incredibly fortunate in that he was able to explore and learn what he chose either through free programs or through scholarships and financial aid. I am fortunate in being in a position now to be able to help other children become more well-rounded individuals while keeping my son’s legacy alive. As a former children’s librarian and museum educator, I have a strong background in educational and aspirational programs for children, and I hope to help guide the organization in choosing programs that will successfully achieve our mission.

Margaret Marnell

DIRECTOR

I have known Judy for many years. I nannied Ilan when he was less than a year old and watched him grow throughout the years. I adored him and dearly miss him. I am so happy that I can be a part of keeping his legacy alive.

After graduating from DePaul with a degree in History of Art and Architecture, I then worked for the department for 11 years. Being an art historian and surrounded by art history, I know how important it is to experience art. One of my favorite parts about my time at DePaul was working with incoming Freshmen and watching them transition to a new and exciting time in their lives. After the birth of my daughter in April of 2020, immediately after the shutdown due to COVID-19, my priorities changed, and I realized how important fertility and birthwork was to me. I left DePaul to stay at home with my young daughter and during that time I worked to become an (in)fertility and labor doula. As a doula, I help people navigate fertility treatments, as well as assist people during labor and delivery.

Sara Peterson

TREASURER

Born and raised in the Seattle area, I’ve spent most of my working life in the art glass industry. I was with Spectrum Glass Company for nearly 18 years, primarily filling the role of Graphic Designer. I also taught glass fusing on behalf of the company. After Spectrum closed its doors in 2017, I moved to Portland OR to be near my daughter and her family. I now freelance in graphic design, website construction, advise as a glass fusing technical consultant, and play with my grandkids every chance I get. I adore both Judy and Ilan — I dearly wish I had known sweet Ilan, and I hope to meet Judy in person one day!

DIRECTOR

I have lived in Savannah for 25 years. I recently retired from a 20 year career as a commercial insurance agent to open Big South BBQ Co, a restaurant in Rincon GA, with my husband. I have three grown children.

I've known Judy since we were in high school in Atlanta and while I never got the chance to meet Ilan, he and Judy will always have a special place in my heart. It is an honor and a privilege to help Judy carry on Ilan's memory by being part of the 5PO team.

Elizabeth Walling

Secretary

I am Elizabeth Walling. I met Judy through mutual business connections several years ago and we've become close friends during that time. I never met Ilan, but it's clear that he brought so much joy and kindness into the world. It's a privilege to be a part of keeping his legacy alive through 5 Purple Oranges.

After spending more than a decade as the owner and creative director for The Nourished Life, I decided to follow my dream of going back to school. I moved to upstate South Carolina with my two children, and I am currently working on earning a degree in Creative and Professional Writing at Converse University.
